Sammy is the founder of Mountain Data Group as well as a Professor of Demography in the Department of Economics at Colorado State University.  He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology, Colorado School of Public Health.  An expert in causal inference and applied statistical and econometric tools, his academic research focuses on the economic, health and social costs of pollution and environmental risks.  His academic research has been funded by various agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  His published scientific work appears in diverse academic journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Risk Analysis, Environmental Science and Technology, Environment International, Climatic Change, Environmental Research, International Journal of Epidemiology, American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Ecological Economics, and the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists.
